Lifesaving
Patrols: Volunteer surf lifesavers patrol Newcastle Beach during the swimming season, typically from September through April. Patrols run on weekends and public holidays, from 8.30 am to 5 pm to maintain:
- Beach surveillance.
- The red and yellow swimmer area flags set in the optimum position on the beach to keep swimmers safe from rips.
- Regular roving patrols from the Canoe Pool to the Bogey Hole to keep check on swimmers
Rescue Readiness: Patrol members are trained in surf rescue techniques, including board rescues, inshore rescue boat (IRB) operations, and rock rescues. CPR and advanced first aid are core proficiencies, refreshed annually.
Volunteer Base: Operations are powered entirely by volunteers. Members contribute thousands of hours each season, reflecting the club’s strong community ethos.
Emergency Support Beyond the Beach: Newcastle SLSC members also assist in broader community emergencies, such as flood relief and disaster response, extending their lifesaving skills beyond surf patrols.
